About the Profession
Respiratory Care is a dynamic profession involved as an integral part of the health care team. Respiratory Care Practitioners are involved in the diagnosis, treatment and education of patients with heart and lung diseases. Typically, Respiratory Care Practitioners are a part of the hospital’s lifesaving response team that answers patient emergencies.

While Respiratory Care Practitioners work primarily in hospitals, an increasing number have branched into alternative care settings, such as skilled nursing facilitator, physicians’ offices, home health care agencies, specialized care hospitals, medical equipment supply companies, and patients’ homes. In the hospital setting, Respiratory Care Practitioners provide services on a 24 hour seven days a week basis. Day, evening and nightshifts are available. Salary varies depending on shifts worked and regional location, but it is typically in the $12 to $15 per hour range for entry- level positions.

Upon completion of the Advanced Respiratory Therapy program at Coosa Valley Technical College, graduates are eligible to take the National Certification examination. Successful completion of this examination provides the practitioner with the designation of Certified Therapist and allows licensure to practice in the State of Georgia. After successfully completing CRT credentialing the graduate from the Advanced Respiratory therapy Program is eligible for the Advanced National Credentialogy Examination. Upon successful completion of the Advanced credentialing examination, the credentials of Registered Respiratory Therapist are awarded. Typically, the salary ranges for RRT is $15 to $18 per hour but is regionally variable and will depend on length and level of experience.

The need for Respiratory Care Practitioners is expected to steadily grow in the coming years due to the large increase in the aging population. The impact of environmental problems that have already contributed to the yearly rise in the number of reported asthma cases, and technological advances in the treatment of heart attack, cancer, and accident victims, as well as premature babies. It is expected the need for qualified Respiratory Care practitioners will grow by nearly 40 percent in the next eight years and the need will increase well into the next decade. As in many areas of health care, today there is a shortage of qualified Respiratory Care practitioners. Recruiters throughout the state of Georgia continue to contact the Program Director of Respiratory Therapy at Coosa Valley Technical College to recruit program graduates. For more information about how to enroll at Coosa Valley Technical College, call 706.295.6963 or 1.888.331.2882 toll free.
