Campus Security

The Director of Campus Safety and Facilities Maintenance personnel provide routine security services. Each work unit from Administrative Services, Instructional Services and Student Services participates in daily security duties. All staff perform observational patrols, general assistance, awareness and prevention. College personnel do not have arrest or police authority. Each campus works very effectively with the local law enforcement agencies. Reports of property crimes, disorderly conduct or suspicious activity should be made promptly to the college receptionist or to the Vice President of Operations. Crimes in progress and life threatening situations should be reported to 911.

Facility and Grounds Security
Access control is a very important part of security. Facilities Maintenance personnel supervise the locking and unlocking of buildings. The Director of Facilities approves and issues keys. All buildings on the CVTC campuses are alarmed and monitored while closed. Only staff with keys and an access code can enter after hours. Students may not remain in the buildings without an instructor present.

Outdoor lighting is maintained for access to buildings and in parking areas. Maintenance reports for broken locks or lights should be made immediately to the Director of Facilities.

The Polk County and Gordon County campuses operate video surveillance cameras.

Campus grounds, lawns, trees and shrubbery are maintained in a manner to increase visibility and to deter criminal activity.

CVTC does not own or operate any resident facilities for students.

Timely Warnings
Timely warnings will go out whenever a threat to students and employees is present for violent crime. Flyers, email and phone messages are the most commonly used methods. Building ‘runners’ will deliver messages to classrooms and offices when safe and appropriate. A log record of criminal incidents is maintained and available for review in the Safety and Security office (Floyd County Campus in Rome).

The college does not sponsor or control any off-campus property for student organizations. Students should contact their local 911 emergency agency when involved in a criminal situation while off campus.

Crime Prevention and Safety Awareness
All new students are required to attend an orientation session with Student Services staff for a briefing on campus disciplinary procedures, legal issues and individual rights. Although there is no set schedule for other crime prevention/educational programs, presentations on campus safety and related topics are given upon request. The Student Activity Board sponsors a speaker series called ‘Lunch and Learn’ on an occasional basis throughout the year. Instructional Services discusses safety at each Faculty meeting. In-service training for staff development includes campus crime topics.

Awareness posters and information are displayed in campus facilities. The Safety Office (on the Floyd County Campus in Rome and the Media Centers maintain a resource library of video tapes, periodicals and pamphlets.

Sexual Assault
What to do if you are a victim of sexual violence:
  • Find a friend. Seek support during this ordeal.
  • Get medical attention. A physical examination will help assure that any injuries will be identified and treated. Testing for sexually transmitted diseases will also be provided.
  • Preserve evidence. It is important to note that the sexual assault victim's person and surroundings are primary components of evidence in a crime scene. Therefore, we caution the victim to avoid douching, showering, changing clothes, brushing teeth, drinking or disturbing the crime scene in any way so that critical evidence may be preserved. This evidence will be necessary for a successful criminal prosecution.
  • Report the crime. The decision about whether to report an assault is the victim's. The victim may take action through criminal prosecution, the college discipline system or both. If the victim does not want to file an official police report of the incident, they should still provide information about it to the Vice President of Student Services. This will initiate campus disciplinary action and may prevent another assault.
  • Seek counseling. All assaults are traumatic events. Support from a trained counselor can help the victim understand and work through the trauma. The Student Services counselor handles these situations confidentially and with the utmost discretion. Referrals can be arranged with local victim assistance agencies.

The GBI maintains the Sex Offender registry. Information can be viewed at the GBI web site.

Student Discipline Process
A student is subject to disciplinary action by the college which may include suspension or expulsion for commission of any of the following violations on the property of CVTC or any function conducted by the college: possession of alcoholic beverages, damage to property, dishonesty, disorderly assembly, disorderly conduct, possession of drugs and falsification of records.

Students and employees should report any incident of alleged sexual harassment that occurs on campus. To report a complaint, file a written statement with Dr. Steve Bradshaw, Vice President of Student Services.
Both accuser and accused are entitled to have an advisor present at all hearings and proceedings. Both parties shall be informed of the outcome of any disciplinary hearing.

Assistance will be arranged for filing criminal charges, counseling and academic alternatives.

Drug & Alcohol Policies and Programs
The use, possession or distribution of narcotics, amphetamines, barbiturates, marijuana, hallucinogens and any other dangerous or controlled drug, not prescribed by a physician, is prohibited on CVTC property or at CVTC sponsored events. Georgia law 20-2-1184 requires colleges to report to police and the district attorney all crimes of violence, weapons and/or drugs.

A student convicted of a felony drug offense must be suspended from any state college.

Not only are the legal risks grave, but there are extremely dangerous health risks associated with the use of illicit drugs and the abuse of alcohol. CVTC, through its Office of Student Services and Office of Instructional Services, is prepared to offer information and assistance with any drug or alcohol related problems.
