If you’ve dreamed of working in the medical field but don’t have the money or interest in years of schooling to become a doctor or other specialist, you will be happy to know you have other options. You can find plenty of job options in a vocational school, which will only take a few months of study before you are able to search for a job in your chosen field.
You will find many vocational schools offering medical technician certifications. You will learn how to operate specific equipment to assist doctors and other medical personnel in treating patients. There are radiology technicians and diagnostic medical sonographers as two examples in this field. Here is a look at a career as a medical technician.
You can become a trained dental hygienist at a vocational school, which will allow you to assist dentists with teeth cleaning and other tasks. You may also be able to become certified as a dental assistant, who assists with patient care. You may be able to help set up a room for the next patient or hand instruments to the dentist as they perform oral surgery or other procedures.
EMT and Paramedics
If you want hands-on work with patients, you can become an emergency medical technician or paramedic. You will need to become licensed and learn basic emergency care until the patient can get to a hospital or other emergency medical facility.
Another option for direct patient care is as a licensed practical nurse or LPN. With this certification, you would be able to provide patient care under the supervision of an RN. You could work in a hospital, nursing home, rehab facility and other places that utilize the services of a nursing staff.
Physical therapists must attend college to be licensed to practice, but they require the help of assistants who can get their start in a vocational school. If this sounds like an area of interest for you, consider studying to be a physical therapist assistant, which usually requires a two-year program. You also have the option of becoming a physical therapy aide, which has fewer requirements with a one-year program. As an assistant, you would be able to provide some direct patient care while an aide works to set up the area for the therapist.
If you love the medical field but not the years of study, you’ll be happy to discover several options which don’t require a degree. Check out the choices available in your area and find a career you can enjoy without the time and expense required to go to college.
